Join a maximum of 12 travellers on this 10-day small group safari from Windhoek to Victoria Falls. You'll travel in a luxury overland vehicle through Namibia's Etosha National Park, Botswana's Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, ending at the mighty Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
Our luxury overland vehicle offers more comfort and better wildlife viewing than standard overland trucks. You'll stay in comfortable lodges most nights, with two nights under canvas at a rustic tented camp in the Khwai region—giving you an authentic bush experience in the heart of the Okavango Delta.
This small group safari follows the same incredible route as our standard tours, just with fewer people and a more comfortable ride.
This small group safari from Windhoek to Victoria Falls kicks off in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, where you will be collected for your transfer to Etosha National Park in our luxury overland vehicle. The drive is approximately 4 hours.
Etosha National Park is one of Africa's largest game reserves, spanning 22,270 square kilometres. Its name aptly translates to "Great White Place", referring to the vast Etosha Pan, which sits in the centre, a salt pan visible even from space.
Enjoy lunch on arrival to get acquainted with your fellow travellers (maximum 12 guests) and hear more details about the journey ahead. We then head out on an afternoon game drive. The park is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species such as the black rhinoceros. We will explore around the pan and in the savannah beyond, keeping an eye open for the animals we may encounter, from an elephant or lion basking in the sun to the dazzle of zebras, ostriches, or giraffes. Depending on the time of year, you may spot flocks of flamingos, attracted to pools of water on the Pan during the wet season.
Enjoy a spectacular Namibian sunset before settling into the comfortable Park Rest Camp for the night.
We enjoy a final drive through Etosha National Park before we bid the arid landscapes farewell and head northeast to the verdant lands surrounding the Kavango River, where waters from the Angolan highlands flow on their journey through Namibia before emptying into the Okavango Delta in neighbouring Botswana. Our destination in Divundu lies on the banks of the Kavango River, a vital life-source in this region attracting a wealth of wildlife to its banks, its waters teeming with crocodiles and hippos.
This morning, we begin our day drifting along the tranquil waters of the Kavango River on a leisurely boat cruise, surrounded by lush riverbanks alive with birdsong and the possibility of spotting hippos wallowing or crocodiles basking in the shallows. Later in the afternoon, there’s the option to join a game drive in Mahangu National Park—a hidden treasure where peaceful landscapes meet exhilarating wildlife encounters, from herds of elephants and buffalo to antelope grazing gracefully, and perhaps even the rare sight of a big cat.
On Day 4 of our small group overland safari, we bid farewell to Namibia and continue following the Kavango River towards the Botswana border. After border formalities are complete, we head through the Delta landscapes towards the town of Maun, where we will spend the night.
Arriving in Maun, you have the chance to take an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta (weather and time permitting). The flight offers the chance to get a unique aerial perspective of this great natural wonder – a river delta flowing into a dry, dusty desert and teeming with wildlife.
Day 5 of our small group safari sees us leaving the luxury overland vehicle behind and heading out in smaller 4x4 safari vehicles with overnight bags for our 2-night trip into the Okavango Delta region. We will spend the next nights in a tented camp in the Khwai Conservation Area of the Delta, located between the renowned Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. This area is known for its excellent game viewing throughout the year. With luck, we'll see plenty of wildlife as we drive.
After settling into camp, we head out to a polers' station about an hour from the lodge. Local guides will paddle us out into the Delta waterways in traditional-style mokoros (dugout canoes). The guides have an intimate knowledge of the reed-lined channels and tranquil lagoons dotted with lily pads and host to a great variety of animals. Get a close-up look at the unique flora and fauna of the Okavango Delta as we move along slowly and quietly. You are able to take a nature walk on one of the islands, a chance to learn about the fascinating plants and smaller creatures encountered.
Accommodation in Khwai can best be described as a rustic-style mobile fly camp. Your meru-style tent is equipped with 2 single beds and adjoining en-suite amenities consisting of a bucket shower system and chemical toilet.
We take a full-day safari drive through the north-eastern part of the Okavango Delta in Moremi National Park today. The natural beauty of Moremi is the quintessential Okavango Delta experience, with meandering waterways, lagoons and papyrus swamps dotted with palm-fringed islands and open grassland. It is lush and verdant as the seasonal waters transform the delta, supporting a prolific wildlife population and over 1,000 plant species, making it a vibrant hotspot for biodiversity. Hippos and crocodiles wallow in the waters, and during our safari drive, we hope to spot the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros) as well as numerous other species, including cheetah, giraffe, zebras, many types of antelope, and a rich variety of birdlife. The park is particularly famous for its leopards and endangered wild dogs.
Our small group overland safari departs early this morning, back through the Delta landscapes to rejoin our luxury overland vehicle in Maun. Then, we're on the road again, arid plains interrupted only by the occasional acacia tree towards the expansive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans where the surreal scenery feels as if you've stepped onto another planet. We will overnight at a lodge in the palm tree fringe of Nata Pan, one of the salt pans which receives seasonal water from the Nata River. During the wet season the area is a haven for migratory birds.
After settling into the lodge, we will head out for an afternoon drive around Nata Pan. Depending on the time of your trip, you may catch sight of seasonal flamingos painting a splash of pink against the monochrome palette of the pans.
Day 8 of our small group safari sees us leave the Pans and head north towards the more lush catchment areas of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers. We arrive in Kasane by lunchtime and settle into our lodge on the banks of the Chobe River.
After a hearty lunch and siesta, we will head up the river to enjoy the wildlife of the Chobe National Park from the water. The area is known for its number of elephants, and we are sure to have great views as they come down the riverbanks to bathe and drink.
It is time to say goodbye to Botswana as we embark on our next border crossing on our overland tour, into Zimbabwe. Entering Zimbabwe this morning, we drive to Victoria Falls town, home to the largest waterfall in the world.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Victoria Falls, is one of the most unforgettable natural spectacles in Africa - an absolute must-see! Today you have free time to visit the Falls and experience the 'Smoke that Thunders' as translated from the local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya – feel the roar of the river and stroll through the rain forest created by the resulting spray. In addition to visiting the spectacular Victoria Falls, you can jump straight into one of the thrilling adventure activities (optional extra) this afternoon or take it easy.
Our overnight accommodation is at a riverside lodge, located on the banks of the Zambezi River on the outskirts of the Zambezi National Park. We stay in twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms at the lodge in Victoria Falls, enjoying the facilities, including a swimming pool, internet, bar, laundry services, and restaurant.
This small group safari from Windhoek to Victoria Falls finishes after breakfast, but we highly recommend staying in Vic Falls for a few extra days after your safari.
Most people spend an extra day or two at Victoria Falls after this overland tour to participate in optional adventure activities. This part of the Zambezi River is famous for offering some of the best whitewater rafting in the world, an unforgettable experience! Other adventures include helicopter and microlight flights over Vic Falls, zip-line rides, trips to Livingstone Island and swimming in Devil's Pool.
