This includes walking with lions, riding elephants and any other tourist operation putting travelers in close contact with animals that would normally live wild and separate from human contact.

We absolutely do not encourage or endorse this type of wildlife interaction operation. For more information on why this is not good for Africa's wild animals, please see our detailed blog post on the subject.

Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Cape Town to Cederberg Region – South Africa

Our epic Cape Town to Zanzibar Lodge Safari leaves Cape Town on the morning of Day 1. We make a last stop on the outskirts of the city to look back at the iconic view of Table Mountain from across Table Bay. We then head north, through farmlands and past farm stalls that dot the road. Sweeping fields give way to towering mountains as we reach the Cedarberg region with the beautiful Cederberg Mountains known for their dramatic rock formations, unique sandstone cliffs, and ancient San rock art. There are over 130 named peaks, the highest being Sneeuberg at 2,026 meters (6,646 feet). This is also home to the indigenous Rooibos plant, prized as a herbal tea known internationally as Red Bush tea.

Our first lodge lies outside the town of Citrusdal at the foot of the mountains. We will be treated to a hearty traditional meal this evening as our guide briefs us on the adventure ahead.

  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Citrusdal to Namaqualand & Orange River – Namibia

Our journey continues northwards, following the Cederberg mountains. Eventually the landscape flattens as we reach the dry Northern Cape Province. Here our route takes us through the Namaqualand, renowned for its breathtaking springtime wildflowers (typically August/September), when vibrant blooms burst into flower on the otherwise arid landscape. We make a brief stop for supplies in the dusty town of Springbok before heading to the Orange River, border between South Africa and Namibia.

After border formalities are complete, we make our way to the Namibia riverbank of the Orange River where we will stay overnight.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Orange River to Fish River Canyon & Ais Ais – Namibia

Our Overland Tour has an easy start this morning, allowing you the option to take a canoe trip on the river. The Orange River, known as the Gariep in the indigenous KhoeKhoe language, is the longest river in South Africa that originates in the mountains of landlocked Lesotho. Enjoy the rocks, dramatic desert landscapes and occasional wildlife as you gently glide through the water.

After lunch, we climb back on the overland truck and head inland to the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world, and the Ais Ais Resort located nearby. We will stay at Ais Ais resort and get to enjoy the end of day soaking in the mineral rich hot springs located here.

  • Included Activities: Ais-Ais Hot Springs
  • Optional Activity: Orange River Canoe Trip (half-day)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Fish River Canyon to Keetmanshoop – Namibia

We rise early this morning and head to the vast Fish River Canyon, some 160 kilometers (99 miles) in length and reaching up to 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) in width. We take a stroll along the canyon rim to enjoy the changing shadows as the morning sunrays create a light show against the canyon landscapes.

Our overland journey continues toward the desert town of Keetmanshoop. En-route we visit a famous Quiver Tree Forest which earned the status of a national monument in 1995. It boasts around 250 quiver tree specimens ranging from 200 to 300 years old, making distinct silhouettes against the rugged landscape. Then we head nearby to explore the Giants Playground, a surreal terrain adorned with stacks of unique dolerite boulders dating back approximately 160 to 180 million years ago that look as if they have been left by giants at play

We stay at a lodge in Keetmanshoop tonight.

  • Included Activities: Fish River Canyon, Quiver Tree Forest & Giants Playground
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Keetmanshoop to Namib Desert – Namibia

Today, our Africa Overland Tour travels deeper into the Namib Desert, the world’s oldest desert. It is a long drive that takes us through the arid expanses of the Karas Region, past unique geological features and the stark beauty of the desert's unique flora and fauna. We are headed to the iconic red-hued dune fields that cover the western reaches of the desert. For the next two nights, we stay at a desert lodge in the heart of the Namib Desert, close to the Namib Naukluft National Park that is our destination for tomorrow. Savor an evening around the campfire with the most incredible ceiling of stars overhead.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Sossusvlei Dunes (Namib-Naukluft National Park) – Namibia

Rising before dawn, we head through the Namib Desert and into the Namib Naukluft National Park. Our first stop is the iconic Dune 45 which we climb for a front-row view of the vibrant sunrise, marvelling over the ever-shifting hues and play of shadows of this iconic place.

Once back at the truck we enjoy a hearty breakfast before being collected in 4x4 safari vehicles to head further into the Sossusvlei dunes and the crusty surface of Deadvlei pan. Take a stroll to admire the surreal vistas of dried out tree trunks scattered across the cracked clay pan, framed by the surrounding otherworldly ochre dunes.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Included Activities: Climb up Dune 45, Sossusvlei Dunes Visit & Deadvlei & Walk

Day 7 & 8: Namib Desert to Swakopmund – Namibia

Before our departure this morning, a knowledgeable local guide takes us on a guided desert walk through this starkly beautiful ecosystem to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Namib and the incredible survival techniques of the desert fauna & flora.

Our Overland Tour then continues north through the desert, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn where we stop to take a picture to mark the occasion. We are then headed for the coastline where the icy Atlantic Ocean meets the hot desert sands. We make our way up the coast to the seaside town of Swakopmund where we will stay for two nights in a comfortable centrally located hotel. Tonight, we’ll enjoy a dinner out at a local restaurant.

Your time is free to explore this quaint town with its German Colonial influences and enjoy the many coffee shops and bakeries that offer a delightful range of German inspired treats. This is the adventure capital of Namibia and there are plenty of adventure activities on offer. Go sandboarding or quad biking on the dunes, try skydiving or take a dolphin cruise on the ocean. Otherwise enjoy a leisurely stroll along the seafront or explore the markets and historical sites on foot.

  • Included Activity: Tropic of Capricorn, Guided Desert Walk, Restaurant Dinner
  • Optional activities: Quad biking, Sandboarding, Skydiving, Dolphin Cruise, and more.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Day 7), Breakfast (Day 8)

Day 9: Swakopmund to Khorixas – Namibia

Our Cape Town to Zanzibar Tour continues up the Namibia coastline where hot desert sands meet the cold waves of the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll stop at the charming desert seaside village of Wlotskasbaken, with its picturesque cottages and the ocean & desert backdrop providing a perfect photo opportunity. Then we head to the nearby Lichen Fields where a guide will tell you more about the curious Lichen colonies and how these peculiar organisms flourish in extreme climates such as this, thanks to the moisture from the frequent sea fogs characteristic of this coastline.

Our next stop is the Seal Colony at Cape Cross, one of the largest gatherings of Cape fur seals globally. During peak breeding season, the colony can swell to over 200,000 seals. Cape Cross is also notable as the site where Portuguese explorer Diego Cão planted a stone cross in 1486, marking his nautical exploration along the African coast. (Please note that the Cape Cross Colony may be closed at times which means that we will not be able to visit the seals.)

The road then heads inland to our next lodge, in the town of Khorixas.

  • Included Activity: Wlotskasbaken Village Visit, Lichen Fields, Cape Cross Seal Colony
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10: Khorixas to Etosha National Park – Namibia

This morning we explore the Twyfelfontein Rock Engravings and a Petrified Forest outside Khorixas with a local guide. This area was inhabited for 6,000 years by the Khoi San. Our knowledgeable guide will tell us more about these early inhabitants who left behind one of Africa's densest concentrations of over 2,500 rock petroglyphs. Next, we visit a nearby Petrified Forest which is now a national monument. In prehistoric times huge tree trunks were washed down a river and deposited in alluvial sands, fossilising over time to create this fascinating prehistoric relic.

Our Overland Africa Tour then leaves Twyfelfontein behind, headed for Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premium wildlife destination. Etosha means “great white place”, which refers to the vast dried salt pan in the center of the park. We will spend the afternoon driving the terrain around the pan on our first game drive, in search of the diverse wildlife that lives here. For the next three nights we will stay at the park rest camps. They each boast a floodlit waterhole close to the camp, so you can enjoy watching the animals come down to drink.

  • Included Activity: Twyfelfontein Rock Engravings, Petrified Forest, Afternoon Game Drive
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11 & 12: Etosha National Park - Namibia

Two full days are dedicated to discovering the wonderful wildlife of Etosha National Park. We take morning and evening game drives around the edges of the Etosha Pan, making stops at the various waterholes and sweep the open plains for wildlife and birds. Our overland truck provides the ideal elevated view for spotting animals and the sparse vegetation makes game viewing easier.

Etosha National Park boasts an unexpectedly rich diversity of animals and birds despite its arid surroundings. Typical wildlife encounters in Etosha include lions and a variety of herbivores - zebras, gemsbok, impalas, springbok, and elegant giraffes. Stay alert for sightings of elephants in the bushy regions, as well as rhinos and elusive leopards. With over 340 bird species, birdwatchers are in for a treat. Some bird highlights are martial eagles, kori bustards, bee-eaters, and ostriches.

In between game drives, enjoy some downtime at camp, lounge by the pool, gather around the campfire, or watch for wildlife at the floodlit watering hole.

Later we rejoin the overland truck and continue our drive to the Botswana border post. Once border formalities are complete, our drive takes us through the Okavango Delta backroads to the bustling town of Maun, gateway for visitors coming to explore the magnificent Okavango Delta.

We stay at a riverside lodge in Maun tonight. Time and weather permitting, you have the option to book a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta for an incredible view over this watery wonderland and its teeming wildlife. We stay in luxury tents at a beautiful tented camp in the Khwai River floodplains for the next two nights with extensive views of grazing wildlife on the sweeping plains. After settling in, we head out in the vehicles once more, driving to a nearby mokoro station to meet up with local guides who will take us out onto the Okavango Delta waterways in traditional mokoro boats.

Sit back and enjoy the serene scene unfolding as your guide guides the boat through reed lined channels that open into lush lagoons. You will stop on one of the islands for a nature walk where your guide will point out tracks and tell you more about the vibrant life of the delta. As you glide back to the mokoro station, enjoy the beautiful light as the sun sets over the delta.

We will enjoy a full day game drive in Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the delta, named after Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe, who established the reserve in 1963 to safeguard their delta homeland from unregulated hunting and cattle encroachment. This makes Moremi one of the earliest reserves in Africa founded by local residents.

Our drive takes us past palm-fringed islands and open grasslands, bordered by winding waterways, lagoons, and papyrus swamps, in search of a diverse array of wildlife. Keep a lookout for the creatures that cross our path, from the renowned Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros) to giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, various antelope species such as the red lechwe (specially adapted for marshy conditions), hyenas, jackals, and the endangered African Wild Dog. The park also boasts a rich assortment of bird species, making it a haven for bird enthusiasts.

Makgadigadi is actually a string of salt pans that is the evaporated remains of giant Lake Makgadigadi which covered most of Botswana many millennia ago.
