Daniel African Travel Expert

I have always loved the outdoors; my childhood holidays were spent camping. This sparked my passion for nature conservation and led me to study travel and tourism. I started my tourism career working for a backpackers lodge in Cape Town; it was one of the first travel centers for people wanting to do overland trips into Africa. After a few years, I set off on an adventure off the beaten track, spending more than five years working and traveling through Europe, North Africa, and Central America, and then home beckoned and I returned to Cape Town. I joined African Budget Safaris in 2012 when it literally was still a spare-bedroom venture; there were four of us and while we are still in Cape Town, these days we are a team of about ten travel consultants.

The parts of Africa I have seen...

Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zanzibar

Places in Africa I still want to visit…

I really can’t wait to visit Rwanda and Uganda for many reasons.

One of my best African experiences I would recommend is…

Visiting a floodlit waterhole in Etosha as the sun is setting. The silhouette of elephants quietly walking out of the hot dusty desert toward the waterhole is mesmerizing, watching other wildlife make way for them is pretty special.

I will never forget the time in Africa when…

I visited Victoria Falls. It was February and there was so much water, the sheer volume of water, the noise, and the spray coming off the waterfall were insane.

I have recently traveled to…

Madagascar, I was surprised by the number of different tribes and how African it actually is. Madagascar is incredibly unique; and you can’t quite believe how vast it is. It’s definitely a destination to keep going back to.

When you come to Africa…

Make sure you remember a head torch, to learn some local lingo; don’t forget a material (fabric) shopping bag and a sarong.
