Big birds and big caves - are the star attractions of the Oudtshoorn area. A tour of the impressive Cango Caves is a must when you visit Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. While in Oudtshoorn you will see plenty of ostriches as this region hosts some of the largest ostrich farms on the planet. In addition to its famous underground caverns and abundant ostriches, Oudtshoorn also gives you a taste of the semi-arid Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) region, its unique culture, and warm hospitality.
Tours to Oudtshoorn all visit the renowned Garden Route area of South Africa - a beautiful region, ideal for outdoor lovers and adventure seekers. Top Garden Route destinations typically visited are Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Nature's Valley, and Tsitsikamma. On the Garden Route favorite outdoor and adventure activities include kayaking, bungee jumping, tubing, zip-line tours, hiking, surfing, boat cruises, shark cage diving, skydiving, sandboarding, and more.
One of the best aspects of these South African Tours to the Garden Route is the diversity of scenic landscapes you get to visit. Its rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, tranquil lagoons, majestic mountains, fynbos-covered hills, and indigenous forests, coupled with the semi-desert Karoo and a bit of African bushveld. Another drawcard of Garden Route Tours is the excellent infrastructure, accommodation, and tourist facilities in this part of the country.
For Southern Africa Tours that visit Oudtshoorn & Cango Caves options range from 3 to 20 days in length.
The shortest tours (about a week long) focus on the Garden Route and Western Cape regions of South Africa. These tours mostly start and end in Cape Town, or travel from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (or the reverse order - Port Elizabeth to Cape Town). There is also the option of traveling from George (which has an airport) on the Garden Route to Cape Town. Highlights on these tours generally include the Western Cape areas of the Garden Route, Cape Whale Route, and Cape Winelands, along with Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape.
When you add an extra week to your guided trip (12- or 13-day tours) you will also visit the lush KwaZulu-Natal Province where highlights include Durban and the Drakensberg Mountains. The tours in the two-week range also visit the landlocked country of Lesotho, known as the Kingdom of Lesotho, known for its pony trekking.
Take 20 days to explore Southern Africa on a budget and you'll be able to combine the picturesque Garden Route with Kruger National Park - South Africa's leading safari destination! These longer trips travel between Cape Town and Johannesburg or Pretoria, in either direction, so you can start or end your tour in Cape Town. On our three-week-long budget tours that include Oudtshoorn and Cango Caves, you also travel to the coastal Isimangaliso Wetland Park and acclaimed Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and/or Hlane Royal National Park in Swaziland.
Most of our shorter Garden Route Tours are Budget Lodge Safaris and Backpacking Tours which take between 8 and 13 travelers. Almost all of these short tours make use of microbus (mini-van) transport with air-conditioning. A few of the trips are conducted in a small overland vehicle or a luxury Mercedes Sprinter bus. There are also a few short (one-week long) Overland Africa Tours which travel in larger groups and overland expedition vehicles. Here you can choose between camping and accommodated tours. Overland Tours are more social, adventure-style travel experiences requiring a certain level of participation, because of the big group sizes and large overland vehicles.
Our longer Southern Africa Budget Tours (two to three weeks) are primarily Accommodated Overland and Camping Overland tours. Group size on these tours is a maximum of 20 or 24 guests. Although Overland Africa Travel generally appeals to younger travelers (in their 20s and 30s), reasonably active people of all ages are welcome. All you need is a healthy sense of adventure and the willingness to participate.
If the big group trips are not for you, there is the 20-day Best of South Africa Budget Lodge Tour option, which runs with only 8 guests. This more exclusive South African Safari travels by luxury tour vehicle (air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinter) and includes a domestic flight from Johannesburg to George on the Garden Route.
