Zimbabwe’s Climate & Seasons

Zimbabwe has two distinct seasons, each offering a unique experience. The cooler, dry winter season, which runs from April to October, sees moderately hot days and sunny skies, creating ideal conditions for exploration. During these months, the malaria risk is also reduced, which is a bonus. If scorching temperatures are not your favoured scenario, however, you may wish to consider visiting Zimbabwe between April to September, where daytime temperatures remain pleasantly gentle. That said, do come prepared for chilly nights during these months, especially from May to August, when temperatures often dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

By October, Zimbabwe really starts to heat up again, as temperatures soar into the high 80s, making this a very hot and dry month. Then, as November rolls in, the landscape transforms into a lush green oasis under the influence of the wet season, which usually lasts until March. This wet season is hot, however, with temperatures staying in the high 80s and 90s until April or May, so do be warned. While technically considered low season, with some safari parks closing and heavy rains occasionally rendering certain roads and parks inaccessible, these months do bring their own allure. In particular, the rains drape Zimbabwe in abundant foliage and, if you’re into birdwatching, you’ll love the arriving flocks of migratory species. Add to this the fact that the rains are often limited to afternoon showers (and that these majestic storms are often followed by captivating sunsets), and you’ll soon realize many amazing adventures are still very possible in this season.

Best Time for a Zimbabwe Safari

Zimbabwe's dry winter season, spanning from May to October, wins as the prime time for game viewing, thanks to its mild temperatures, scarce rainfall, and a lower risk of malaria. As natural water holes dwindle, vast herds converge upon the remaining lakes, waterholes, and rivers, creating an extraordinary wildlife spectacle in national parks such as Hwange and Mana Pools. Zimbabwe’s spectacular wildlife viewing really peaks from July to October, with vegetation thinning then and animals becoming more easily spotted by keen safari-goers! However, a word of caution: September and October can scorch with intense heat and be very dry, so if you’re not good with high temperatures, you should steer clear of this period! That said if you can brave the heat, these shoulder months could be the best time for a Zimbabwe safari, offering exceptional value for money and incredible wildlife encounters.

While the wet, summer months are thought to be less optimal for safaris, they do still offer glimpses of captivating wildlife; and this season has its own allure, as the landscapes bloom with gorgeous, lush greenery. This season also offers its own unique wildlife viewing opportunities, including the birthing season so, if you like the idea of getting up close with baby elephants and watching gangly newborn giraffes take their first steps, this could be a good time to come! Moreover, it is during the rainy season that Zimbabwe becomes a haven for incredible birdlife, with migratory species gracing its skies, so don’t miss this time of year if you’re a keen twitcher.

Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is captivating at all times, so whenever you visit them, you’re sure to be mesmerized by their magnitude! That said, it is worth knowing that Zimbabwe’s two distinct seasons mean the water levels in the Zambezi River fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, as they are hugely affected by the seasonal rains. As such, the force of the Falls varies enormously during different months, providing different experiences and activities.

The Zambezi’s waters are highest towards the end of Zimbabwe’s wet season, which is between February and April. At this time, the Zambezi River swells with rainfall and Victoria Falls becomes an awe-inspiring display of thundering water. The mist and spray generated by the Falls during these months create a magical atmosphere, often accompanied by vibrant rainbows. While the volume of water can limit visibility, you’ll really feel the force of this World Wonder at this time!

However, for better visibility, it can be good to wait for the waters of the Zambezi to decrease a little. This is because, when this epic waterfall is in full force, the immense curtain of water and powerful, far-reaching spray can actually obscure some views of the Falls. Conversely, when water levels decrease a little, they can sometimes better reveal the full grandeur of these Falls. It is really the clear skies of the dry season therefore that allow for better visibility at Victoria Falls - granting visitors the opportunity to witness the powerful cascades in all their glory. Additionally, the drier conditions make it easier to explore the surrounding areas of Victoria Falls and take in some of the many activities on offer, such as river cruises, hikes, helicopter rides, and white-water rafting. In fact, during some months when the water is highest, white water rafting is not available because the currents are too strong, so it's worth checking before booking if you’re keen to ride the rapids!

To see the Falls at their best, you may also want to avoid visiting at the end of the dry season - October through to early December - when water levels are so low that much of the waterfall’s powerful jets are reduced to a gentle flow. For these reasons, the optimal time to visit Victoria Falls is generally regarded as the start of the dry season - during May and June. At this time you can hopefully enjoy clear views and amazing adventure activities, while still feeling the raw power of the falls in full flow!

Overall Best Time to Visit Zimbabwe

If your priorities from your Zimbabwe trip are to see Victoria Falls in its full majestic power and experience the most incredible safari conditions this country has to offer, then the best time to visit Zimbabwe is either May or June. During these months, the temperatures are moderate, the skies should be clear, wildlife viewing conditions are optimal and you can enjoy some of the many incredible activities on offer at Victoria Falls too. However do be aware that, for these reasons, these months are also considered peak season in Zimbabwe, and accommodation and tour rates tend to be higher then. It is best to book well in advance!
