About Pilanesberg History & Heritage

What is the history of the Pilanesberg region?

The region’s history dates back to the Middle and Iron Ages, with archaeological evidence of hunter-gatherers and early farmers. The area was later home to Setswana-speaking tribes, including the Bakgatla and Bakubung. The park’s name honours Chief Pilane, a forefather of the Bakgatla people.

What is the history of the Pilanesberg National Park?

In 1969, the Bophuthatswana government decided to create a national park to complement the nearby Sun City resort. This involved a negotiation with the Bakgatla tribe to include the northern mountainous region farming communities in the park, and the relocation of people to a new town to the east of the park. In 1979, wildlife was reintroduced to the area in a major project called "Operation Genesis".
