Inside Guide to Solo Travel in South Africa

Friends are great, but getting the gang out of the group chat? The 9th circle of hell.

No Friends, No Problem: Go on a Solo Safari in South Africa

So why not leave your non-committal favs at home and go on a solo safari in South Africa? All you need is a backpack, multiple camera memory cards (trust), and a solid group tour.

Unlike other African safari destinations like Kenya or Tanzania, South Africa makes solo safaris simple and wayyyy more affordable. Your park fees are lower, the top national parks and private reserves are easily accessible, and you don’t have to worry about paying for a minimum of four seats on a charter flight.

So if you're flirting with the idea of solo safari travel in South Africa, here is your sign to stop overthinking and book your trip.

Why South Africa is Perfect for Your First Solo Safari

Let’s start with the basics. South Africa is one of the most solo-travel-friendly countries in Africa. Why? It’s Africa on easy mode.

  • English is widely spoken in the cities, towns, and safari lodges. You won’t need to learn how to mime “Do you have insect repellent?” in 12 languages.

  • The tourism infrastructure is strong. There are regular domestic flights to all major destinations and bush flights to private reserves. It’s easy to rent a car and plan a road trip, especially around the Garden Route and Cape Town.

  • It's affordable compared to other safari destinations in Africa. Your bank account will cry, but not as hard as in Botswana.

  • There are tons of group safari options to help you avoid the sting of single supplement fees. You can choose from a variety of itinerary options, whether you’re craving a mix of bush and beach or you want to spend all your time exploring Kruger National Park.

  • You’re never alone unless you feel like it. You’ll always share game drives with other guests, so there is no pressure to go alone. Plus, you can leave the tripod in your room. The guides are usually happy to snap a few pics of you.

The Best Solo Safari Destinations in South Africa

With no shortage of options, here are some of the best safari spots in South Africa for solo travellers.

Big 5 safari Kruger National Park
Big 5 safari Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park

Kruger is South Africa’s Big 5 headline for a reason. It’s the largest national park in South Africa, stretching all the way to the borders of Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Easily accessible from Johannesburg or Cape Town with daily flights, you can land in the morning and see your first elephant by sunset. The park has a range of luxury to budget accommodation options, giving solo travellers maximum wildlife and minimal logistical drama.

Our Recommendation: 6-Day Kruger Safari & Panorama Route Tour - South Africa

Addo Elephant National Park

For something different, visit Addo for your solo safari in South Africa. It’s the only place in the world where you can see the Big 7 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, great white shark, and southern right whale).

To get to Addo, you can fly into Qqerberha (Port Elizabeth) and take an airport transfer to your lodge, or you can rent a car and drive up to the park along the famed and fabulous Garden Route.

And there’s more.

Unlike Kruger, it’s a malaria-free safari destination. No weird antimalarial side effects! Whoop! Whoop!

Our Recommendation: 3-Day Addo Elephant Park Safari in South Africa

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is another piece of wildlife history.

It’s the oldest national park in South Africa and is famous for having the greatest rhino density on the continent.

And the best part? It’s not bursting at the seams like Kruger. Swap the crowds for a more off-the-beaten-track vibe that still delivers a Big 5 safari punch.

Our Recommendation: 7-Day Budget South Africa Safari - Kruger, Hluhluwe & St Lucia

Wanna spoil yourself?

Splurge on a solo safari in South Africa at a private reserve like Sabi Sands Game Reserve.

As Kruger’s fenceless neighbour, you’ll get access to the same Big 5 experience, but have a quieter, more curated safari experience that regular national park visitors can’t access.

Sabi Sands is well known for its dense leopard population. Seriously, you’ll often hear people talking about how the big cats fall out of the trees here. While Kruger has many of these fine felines, you will struggle to see leopards on a self-drive safari.

Our Recommendation: 5-Day Southern Sabi Sands Game Reserve Safari

Pilanesberg National Park

Under a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg, Pilanesberg is the best solo safari destination in South Africa if you’re short on time.

The park is malaria-free and easily accessible, without the need for internal flights. You can organise a transfer from the airport or your hotel in Joburg.

If you want something more exclusive, check out Madikwe Game Reserve. It’s the fifth largest in South Africa and a lesser-known gem.

The only snag? It’s more expensive to travel and stay there. The lodges there can organise transfers, but as a solo traveller, you won’t be able to split the cost with anyone.

Our Recommendation: 3-Day Pilanesberg Safari to Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge

Group Safari vs. Doing It All Yourself

If it’s your first trip to South Africa or your first time on safari, group tours are your best friend.

You get:

  • Built-in social vibes: No friends keen on travelling with you? You’ll make new ones on the tour.

  • Zero stress over logistics: Your transport, park entry, accommodation, and game drives are all taken care of, so the only thing you need to do is keep your eyes open for signs of lions sleeping in the bush.

  • Safety in numbers: You’re not navigating dirt roads on your own. Group tours keep things structured and safe, especially if you’re unfamiliar with driving long distances in a foreign country.

  • Access to knowledgeable guides: Instead of aimlessly self-driving around Kruger, you’ll have guides who go out into the bush daily and know where to find the animals.

  • No single supplement: Unless you want a private room, you usually won’t pay a single supplement fee, bringing down the total cost of your trip.

  • Serious value for money: When you add up car rental, park fees, petrol, accommodation, food, and guided game drives, a DIY safari isn’t always cheaper. Group tours come with everything bundled at a lower cost than if you put it together yourself.

Still want to experience a true solo travel adventure?

You can always spend a few days in Cape Town alone and then fly to Johannesburg or Kruger to meet up with your safari crew.

As the great Hannah Montana says, “You can get the best of both worlds!”
