There are so many things to do in Zanzibar that you will be planning your next visit before you have finished your first!
While the Zanzibar archipelago also includes Pemba and Mafia amongst its small scattering of islands, it’s Unguja that most people refer to when they talk about Zanzibar Island, so that’s the destination we’ll focus on with the best things to do.
And with that in mind, here’s the full lowdown from our team of African travel experts on the top things to do in Zanzibar with some incredible activities to make the most of your visit to the magical Tanzanian island of Zanzibar.

Pure white powdery beaches, crystal clear seas, and the opportunity to kick back and relax while swinging gently in a hammock… is Zanzibar calling your name yet?!
If yes, then Unguja has plenty of gorgeous beaches to visit. In fact, you'll be spoilt for choice.
Here are our top recommendations:
Paje Beach: A dreamy tropical spot with a relaxed vibe located on the southeast coast of the island. If you can tear yourself away from relaxing on this fantastic beach, then why not try your hand at kitesurfing or scuba diving, which are both offered in this perfect water sports location.
Kendwa Beach: Powdery white sand and calm waters make this northern Zanzibar beach a great spot for a dip in the water. Head to this amazing location later in the day to see an epic sunset - the views are absolutely legendary.
Nungwi Beach: If you're after a livelier scene, Nungwi Beach, also in the north of Unguja, is where it's at. Packed with beach activities, buzzing energy, and the island's best nightlife, it's the perfect spot to meet other travellers.

Stone Town is the old town of Zanzibar City - the capital of Unguja - and this beautiful spot really is the heart and soul of the island.
Dating back to the 11th century, Stone Town is a fascinating mix of Persian, European, Indian and Arabian cultures - a result of global trading routes that frequently crisscrossed this Swahili coastline.
Wandering the maze of narrow streets here is an absolute treat for the senses, with beautiful, contrasting-coloured architecture, fragrant spice markets and flavourful cuisine making this a breathtaking experience.
Take a guided walking tour to learn about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, admire the 17th century Old Fort of Zanzibar and browse the museums, including Freddie Mercury's old house - yes the famous Queen frontman was born on this island in 1964!
No trip to Stone Town would be complete without visiting the Old Slave Market - a moving museum experience dedicated to showcasing the sobering history and legacy the slave trade had on Zanzibar - don’t miss.
Wrap up a fantastic day in the old town with a visit to Al Forodhani Gardens - a lively outdoor, night food market situated along the coastal promenade of Stone Town.
Here you’ll be able to sample some tasty local delicacies amidst the local crowds, including plenty of fresh fish cooked with traditional spices and ladles of coconut!

Prison Island (also known as Changuu) is a perfect day trip from Zanzibar City / Stone Town via a short, yet extremely beautiful, 30-minute boat ride.
After disembarking, start your island exploration by visiting the old slave jail, built in the 1800s, to learn about its unique history. No need for a guide, this can be done independently.
Swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling can all be enjoyed here too, just don’t leave without discovering one of Prison Island’s highlights - its wonderful and enchanting population of giant Aldabra tortoises, who now call this island home.
These gentle giants average a whopping 200 kg and have a life expectancy of 150 years old. In fact, the oldest tortoise on Changuu Island is currently estimated to be 196 years old! You can also visit the baby tortoises in the nursery, which are super cute!

Known as 'Spice Island,' a trip to Zanzibar wouldn't be complete without experiencing the islands' famous spices through sight, touch, scent, and taste.
There's a spice for every palate here - from cloves, vanilla and turmeric, through to nutmeg, chilli, cardamom, and cinnamon - with many varieties being grown and sold from the island, and once providing the backbone of its economic activity.

Heading to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, for a guided hike through this lush forest and tranquil mangroves, is definitely one of the top things to do in Zanzibar.
Home to the endangered red colobus monkey and other exciting wildlife species, including blue Sykes monkeys, bush babies, and birds, this is a truly magical Zanzibar experience, allowing you to see these amazing animals in their natural habitat.

A true hidden gem tucked away in the tropical jungle of Jambiani, Kuza Cave is a short drive from Paje. This secluded cave with crystal-clear waters and breathtaking rock formations is another top Zanzibar activity.
Aside from visiting this fairytale cave, the culture centre here also offers activities such as Swahili cooking lessons, music, and culture workshops, as well as an evening buffet if you book ahead.
Enjoy the nature and community aspects of Zanzibar with this all-in-one attraction.

Perched on a rock just offshore, about 20 minutes from Paje, this tiny restaurant has become world-famous after its opening in 2011, thanks to its iconic location!
The food here is more expensive than most places on the island, but it’s an unforgettable experience, so it certainly makes for one of the best things to do in Zanzibar.
Lunch is the best time to go, as by dinner time it’s usually too dark to appreciate this unique setting properly.
To reach it when the tide is in, take a small boat, while at low tide, you can simply walk to it.
Be warned: with only 12 tables, it’s often fully booked, so reserve your spot well in advance.

Dreaming of getting away from it all on an even more beautiful island than Zanzibar?
Then you might just be in luck!
If you head across the causeway, which lies off the south coast of Unguja, you’ll find yourself on Uzi Island.
Uzi offers an off-the-beaten-path experience, where you can embrace the terrific tropical scenery, and learn about the local culture of the Zanzibari fishing community in an almost untouched paradise!
Traditional canoes (ngalawa) can be used to get back if you get stranded, or don’t fancy the walk!
