What is a Zambia Walking Safari Like?

There are two main types of walking safari, so let’s explore both options.

Shorter walks, often called bush walks, are perfect for adding a touch of adventure to your safari, without committing to longer walks.

These bush walks, which range from one hour to a half-day, offer a closer look at the wonders of the wilderness than you’ll get on a game drive, allowing you to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the bush more fully.

Most safari camps and tour providers offer bush walks as an activity.

Or, if you’re eager to stretch your legs further, full-day or multi-day walking safari tours provide the ultimate immersion into Zambia's untamed landscapes.

On this type of walking safari in Zambia you’ll hike from camp to camp, covering vast stretches of terrain on foot while encountering wildlife along the way, and sometimes staying at mobile, temporary camps set up for you.

A longer walking safari is ideal for adventurers seeking a deeper connection with the African bush.

Why Choose Zambia for Your Walking Safari?

Anyone who knows about safaris will tell you Zambia is arguably the best destination for African walking safaris.

This country is credited as the birthplace of walking safaris and it still boasts some of Africa's finest on-foot experiences.

But what sets a walking safari in Zambia apart?

Thanks to a continued focus on walking safaris and the excellent training programme that all Zambian walking guides have to undertake, this country boasts an almost unparalleled array of reliably excellent on-foot wildlife adventures.

Highly qualified guides, who’ve undertaken years of training, are full of knowledge about the local flora and fauna, and can skilfully guide any group through the bush on foot.

Meanwhile, an armed ranger, who has also had to pass stringent exams, accompanies every group to protect you if any large animals get too close.

This is a precaution, as walking safaris are very safe when handled properly, so there’s no need to worry. However, there is inevitably some more risk involved in a walking safari compared to a game drive. So it is essential to choose a walking safari that’s properly organised with stringent precautions in place.

Luckily, the safety standards and expertise on walking safaris in Zambia are second to none, meaning you can trust it will be a safe and exhilarating adventure!

There is also a lot of excellent infrastructure set up for walking safaris in Zambia, due to the country’s focus on them. Indeed this county has many remote bush camps dotted throughout the national parks, plenty of which are accessible only by foot. Staying at one of these hidden gems, nestled deep in the bush, gives you a real chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the wilderness.

With its rich biodiversity and expertly guided experiences, Zambia remains the ultimate destination for those seeking an authentic African walking safari.

When to Go on a Zambia Walking Safari?

Since you’ll need good walking conditions to enjoy your Zambia walking safari, the timing of your trip is key!

You’ll want to aim for the country’s dry season, from May to November. At this time, clear skies and comfortable temperatures make for ideal walking safari conditions.

July to September is peak season - popular because the lower temperatures make for more comfortable walking conditions.

This is also when the wildlife spotting conditions are at their best in Zambia because most vegetation has dried out by this point in the season. This gives animals less coverage and makes spotting animals easier.

In winter, animals are densely congregated around the few remaining waterholes and therefore easier to find. This makes for some incredible sightings!

However, with prime wildlife viewing opportunities come larger crowds too.

To avoid these, you might want to do your walking safari in Zambia’s shoulder months of May and June.

At this time you’ll still enjoy more comfortable temperatures and largely dry days, but there is still quite a lot of water around, so not all areas are accessible on foot and the wildlife is more spread out.

October is the tail-end of the dry season and is considered the best month for wildlife viewing.

However it is also the hottest month of the year, so we advise you only come during this month if you can handle the heat! And do remember that extreme heat will mean you can’t do as much walking on your safari.

When NOT to Go on a Zambia Walking Safari?

Walking in the pouring rain is not many people’s idea of fun, so we recommend you avoid the rainy season!

The wet season typically lasts from November to April. The intense rain is not only unpleasant but impractical for a walking safari.

In fact, most safari camps in Zambia close during this period as they can’t be reached when the waters are high.

For a seamless walking safari experience, we recommend you avoid this time and plan your visit between mid-May and early November instead. In this period the safari camps are open and the weather is pleasant enough to explore the bush on foot.
