The Local Park & Activity Payment: What It Covers

Not automatically included in most tour prices is the Local Park Fee and Activity Payment for Etosha National Park.

This is usually collected in cash (using local currency) at the start of your safari and is in addition to your tour cost.

This payment covers most day-to-day operational costs (i.e. local food) and other fees payable only in cash (e.g. Etosha park guides).

  • Average Local Park Fee and Activity Payment cost: R3,000 (US$175)

Etosha Safari Costs: Senior Discounts & Best Travel Times 2026

Getting familiar with Etosha’s travel seasons can help you get the best value.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit this Namibian park is between May and October, during the dry season.

This is when animals gather around waterholes, and game viewing is at its peak. It also means fewer mosquitoes!

From May through August in particular, you’ll enjoy warm days and cooler nights - ideal safari weather and perfect temperature comfort levels

However, bear in mind that from July to September is the peak travel season in Etosha, so accommodation prices and crowd levels are at their highest.

Be sure to book early for the best deals if you want to travel during these months.

  • Sample budget-friendly safari from July to December 2025 (within high season): US$2,875 (+ US$264 single supplement); 14 days
  • Sample luxury safari from July to December 2025 (within high season): US$4,875 (+ US$770 single supplement); 20 days

Otherwise, opt for the slightly quieter, but still good months of May, June and October.

If you’re looking for really low crowds and much better rates, consider travelling during the low season (December to June) or shoulder months (June and October).

Although be warned, November to March brings the stickiest weather, with high temperatures and the bulk of the annual rainfall.

  • Sample budget-friendly safari from January to June 2025 (within low season): US$2,625 (+ US$264 single supplement); 14 days
  • Sample luxury safari from July to December 2025 (within high season): US$4,500 (+ US$770 single supplement); 20 days

Combining low-season rates with potential senior discounts can be a smart and cost-effective way to visit Etosha.

For example, senior travellers, specifically South African social pensioners and permanent residents aged 60 and over, are eligible for discounts on normal tariffs at Etosha National Park (Sunday through Thursday).

Transportation Considerations

Getting around comfortably and safely is a very important part of any safari, especially for senior adventurers.

That’s why, on most of our fully serviced camping safaris in Namibia, you’ll travel in Mercedes-Benz and Toyota vehicles designed to handle rugged roads and varied terrains.

Designed for durability and reliability, these vehicles are equipped to keep you safe and comfortable throughout the trip.

Then, for the majority of our accommodated safaris, you’ll travel in custom-built overland vehicles designed with large slide-down windows and high-back cushioned seats.

These features ensure added comfort on long drives while offering excellent visibility for game viewing and photography.

You'll also often find a built-in fridge to keep your drinks cool, so you can stay refreshed during the hotter months - the perfect way to safari!

Don’t Forget to Account for These Costs…

While most of our packages cover the essentials, there are often additional expenses you should factor into your budget.

When planning your Etosha National Park safari, make sure you also account for these smaller (but significant) costs, which can add up quickly if overlooked

Flights to Namibia are typically not included in safari packages and can be one of the biggest upfront costs, especially if you're flying long-haul.

Consider a flight upgrade for better legroom and a more comfortable experience if you’re a senior traveller with a budget that allows for a bit of luxury.

Depending on your personal health needs and travel itinerary, it’s also wise to budget for vaccinations or any required travel medications before your travel.

Other essential expenses, such as comprehensive travel insurance and visa fees (if applicable), should also be factored in.

On the safari itself, extras such as drinks (beyond what’s provided), additional meals, optional activities (like guided walks and nighttime game drives), and souvenirs can all incur an additional cost.

Tipping is also customary, so it’s essential to factor it into your total Namibia safari costs as well.
