5 Days in Zanzibar: The Perfect Island Itinerary

If you’re planning 5 days in Zanzibar and want the perfect balance of culture, beach time, and budget-friendly island travel, this itinerary hits the sweet spot.

When I visited, five days gave me enough time to explore Stone Town’s history, enjoy a spice tour, and properly switch off on Zanzibar’s dreamy coastline without feeling rushed.

As a solo female traveller, I also found Zanzibar surprisingly manageable for first-timers. Between the warm local hospitality, affordable guesthouses, and easy beach transfers, it felt like one of the most approachable Indian Ocean destinations I’ve visited.

A perfect 5 days in Zanzibar includes 2 days exploring Stone Town’s historic sites and spice farms, plus 3 days on the beaches with snorkelling and water sports. Budget around US$50-150 per day, depending on your accommodation, transport, and activities.

Planning a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday? This 5-day Zanzibar itinerary also works beautifully as a relaxed beach add-on after a Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, or northern Tanzania safari. Spend your safari days tracking lions, elephants, and wildebeest on the mainland, then fly to Zanzibar for Stone Town culture, spice farms, snorkelling, and slow beach mornings.

Days 1-2: Stone Town & Spice Tour

Day 1: Arrive in Stone Town

I always recommend starting your 5 days in Zanzibar in Stone Town, as it offers a solid introduction to the island’s culture, food, and history.

The old town is a famous UNESCO site, Stone Town, packed with carved wooden doors, winding alleyways, and centuries of Swahili trading heritage.

After landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, head into Stone Town and check into a budget guesthouse or small hotel. Guesthouses usually cost around US$30-50 per night, while mid-range hotels are closer to US$80-120.

Spend the afternoon exploring the old town, including the Old Fort, the waterfront, and the famous carved doors and narrow lanes that make Stone Town so atmospheric. At sunset, wander down to Forodhani Gardens for the night market, where you can try seafood skewers, Zanzibar pizza, and sugar cane juice for around US$5-10.

Budget tip: Stone Town guesthouses are some of the best-value places to stay in Zanzibar, especially if breakfast is included.

Day 2: Spice Tour and Beach Transfer

No Zanzibar itinerary feels complete without visiting a spice farm. Zanzibar’s nickname, “The Spice Island”, suddenly makes sense once you smell fresh cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg growing around you.

My tip is to book a half-day spice tour through your guesthouse, as they can often help you find better local rates. Expect to pay around US$20-35, depending on what is included.

In the afternoon, transfer to the beach for the next three nights. Shared transfers usually cost around US$10-30, depending on where you are staying and how much comfort you want. Adventurous travellers can use local transport, but if you are short on time, a shared shuttle or pre-arranged transfer is much easier.

Where to Stay in Stone Town

For budget travellers, Stone Town has a good selection of simple guesthouses, while mid-range travellers can look for small heritage-style hotels close to the old town and waterfront. Check recent reviews, location, air-conditioning, and whether breakfast is included before booking.

Day 3: Transfer to the Beach

After two cultural days in Stone Town, I was very ready for Zanzibar’s beaches.

I travelled to the beach using a shared shuttle, although adventurous travellers can use local dalla dalla minibuses for less. Transfers generally cost around US$10-30, depending on destination and comfort level.

Beach Relaxation and Snorkelling

Choosing the right Zanzibar beach can completely shape your experience. I found Nungwi and Kendwa best for swimming and a livelier atmosphere, with gentler tides that suit first-time visitors.

If you prefer quieter beaches, Matemwe and Pongwe feel calmer and more secluded. Meanwhile, Paje has a much more budget-friendly, backpacker-style vibe, with beach cafés where you can lounge on beanbags and watch the Indian Ocean lap calmly just metres away.

I spent one afternoon snorkelling, which cost around US$30-50, including equipment and transport. Scuba diving is also on offer and usually costs roughly US$60-100, depending on the dive package.

Best beaches: Paje is a good budget choice, Nungwi offers a strong mid-range mix, and Matemwe or Pongwe work well for quieter beach stays.

Day 4: Snorkelling, Prison Island, Mnemba Atoll, or Kitesurfing

For day four in Zanzibar, I’d recommend picking one standout activity rather than overpacking the schedule.

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a good half-day trip if you want to see giant Aldabra tortoises and add a short snorkelling stop. Trips usually cost around US$25-40, depending on what is included.

A Mnemba Atoll snorkelling trip is one of Zanzibar’s most popular marine excursions. It is usually pricier than a local beach snorkelling trip, with tours often costing around US$80-120, but it can be worth it if clear water, coral reefs, and tropical fish are high on your wish list.

If you are staying in Paje, a kitesurfing lesson is another fun option, usually costing around US$50-80. It is a good choice for more active travellers, while beach-loungers can happily skip the harness and remain horizontal with a cold drink instead.

Day 5: Final Beach Morning and Departure

I always leave the final morning flexible during my 5 days in Zanzibar because the island transport doesn’t always run to a strict timetable.

If you opt for a late afternoon flight, you can give yourself some buffer time. I spent my final few hours taking one last swim, enjoying a slow beach walk, and shopping for spices and handmade souvenirs.

Most hotels ask for check out between 10-11 am, so I usually leave my bags at reception and grab a relaxed lunch nearby for around US$10-15.

Airport taxis from the beaches generally cost US$40-60, while shared shuttles range from US$15-25. I’d strongly recommend leaving for the airport at least 3-4 hours before departure because traffic around Stone Town can build up unexpectedly.
