When should I go on safari in Namibia?

If you're wondering when the best time to travel to Namibia is, the answer is whenever you want! While Namibia isn't a Big Five destination, there are still plenty of opportunities to see wildlife. However, the real draw of Namibia is its vast open spaces, making it the perfect place to immerse yourself in the African wilderness fully.

If you want to see a diverse range of animals, Namibia is a great destination, particularly during the winter months in the Caprivi and Etosha Regions. From April to October, these areas experience higher animal densities as the animals gather around waterholes searching for water. The cooler temperatures during this period make it more comfortable than the scorching summer months. Late winter, specifically September to October, is the best time to observe wildlife.

The rainy season in Namibia falls between November and April, but due to the country's arid climate, only a few areas are lush and green. During winter, animals tend to congregate around springs and waterholes, but they disperse to different locations in the summer when the rains come. So while you may not encounter as many animals during the summer months, it's still an exciting time to visit as it's also the season when many animals give birth.

Common Questions about Namibia’s History

When did Namibia gain independence?

Namibia's hard-fought independence was achieved on March 21, 1990, marking a significant historical moment. After years of struggling against colonial authority, Namibia became a sovereign nation. South Africa had occupied and administered the territory under a League of Nations mandate after World War I, but Namibia's independence ended decades of this occupation.

This historical event marked a new beginning for the country, empowering its people to control their destiny and embrace their national identity. Today, Namibia celebrates its Independence Day as a symbol of freedom, perseverance, and determination to shape its future.

When was Namibia founded?

Unlike some other nations, Namibia's establishment as a recognized nation-state did not occur during a specific period. A diverse and intricate mix of indigenous cultures, colonization, and political turmoil instead shapes its history. The San, Nama, and Herero peoples have inhabited the region for thousands of years.

Who colonized Namibia?

Namibia was brought under German colonial control in the late 1800s, becoming a German protectorate called German South-West Africa. However, South Africa took control of the territory during World War I under a League of Nations mandate. Nevertheless, on March 21, 1990, Namibia gained independence from South Africa, marking a significant historical moment.
