Wild Flowers of South Africa: When, Where & How

It's almost that marvellous time of year when the wildflowers of South Africa come into bloom! Every year, during the short spring, the dry interior and west coast erupt into a carpet of wildflowers. Famous around the world, this incredible botanical display, is a bucket-list experience not to be missed.

Find out when and where to see the South Africa wildflowers and how to make the best of your flower trip.

When to see South African wildflowers?

The most important African wildflower information is to know your dates!

The South African spring (in the southern hemisphere), falls between August and October. While the 1st of September is officially known as ‘spring day’, the wildflowers of South Africa start blooming as early as the beginning of August.

The other thing to note is that the South African wildflower season depends hugely on the winter rains and the prevailing weather. So, the opening time of the wildflowers does vary.

Furthermore, not all wildflowers bloom at the same time. Generally speaking, the further north you travel, the sooner the wildflowers bloom. This means that if you travel to see the wildflowers of South Africa in spring, you are likely to see some flowers at their end, some in full bloom, and some that are just beginning to flower.

The best time to see the wildflowers of South Africa in full bloom is from late August to the end of September.

Autumn also holds some delightful secrets. In Nieuwoudtville, the March Lilies, brunsvagia, and other bulbs are at their best in March and April.

Where to see the wildflowers of South Africa?

South Africa's wildflowers do not bloom all at once. Rather, they proceed from north to south in a raucous display until they reach the West Coast National Park just outside of Cape Town.

Experts say that the best way to witness this African wildflower spectacle is to drive north and then work your way gradually south.

This is not an exhaustive list of places to see the amazing South African wildflowers. The Northern Cape is a huge area full of gems waiting to be discovered, and this list is just a starting point.

#1 The Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

From mid-July to mid-August, the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is at its best. This is the furthest north of our wildflower destinations, and the landscape is dry and rugged. The South African side of the park is a buffer zone for the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape World Heritage Site, which stretches nearly 6,000 square kilometres. The succulents will be blooming in spring and keep your eyes open for quiver trees and the weird and wonderful halfmens.

#2 Kamieskroon & The Namaqualand National Park

South of the Richtersveld and the Northern Cape town of Springbok, is Kamieskroon, the gateway to the Namaqualand National Park. Kamieskroon is a small town in the arid Northern Cape that starts blooming in July and comes alive with flowers in August. Only 20km away is the Namaqualand National Park which boasts springbok, hartebeest, and gemsbok.

The wildflowers are, however, the real stars of the show. This is one of the richest botanical regions anywhere in the world, there are over 3,500 plant species of which 1,000 are found nowhere else. The park is excellent and has a network of roads and viewpoints from which to soak up the South African wildflowers on display. The 930-ha Skilpad Wildflower Reserve was established by the WWF in 1988 to preserve these incredible yellow, orange, and white daisies in profusion.

#3 Nieuwoudtville

Located in the heart of sheep farming country in the remote Northern Cape, the small, sleepy town of Nieuwoudtville is renowned as the "bulb capital of the world" and the "Serengeti of the floral kingdom." This area boasts the highest concentration of floral bulbs in the world, with over 1,350 plant species flourishing in the area.

Explore this remarkable display of South African wildflowers at the Nieuwoudtville Wildflower Reserve and the Hantam National Botanical Garden. Visitors can explore local farms during the spring flower season, as many farmers open their land to showcase the stunning blooms.

#4 Clan William, the Biedou Valley, and the Cederberg

From Nieuwoudtville, travel south through Vanrhynsdorp to Clawilliam and the Biedou Valley. Enjoy the drive and look for the “Blomkerk” or Flower Church which hosts the annual flower show from the beginning of September. The town’s wildflower garden can also be found in the Ramskop Nature Reserve, where you can also soak up views of the surrounding Cederberg mountains and dam below. In the Biedou Valley, farmers keep their sheep from grazing during the spring months, ensuring a prolific display of African flowers. The flowers are best viewed between 11 and 3, as they only open during the brightest times of the day.

#5 The West Coast National Park

The West Coast National Park is located just 100 km from Cape Town. The Postberg Flower Reserve is closed to the public except for the spring flower season from August to October. Visitors will be treated to carpets of stunning wildflowers as well as zebra and wildebeest. Known for its abundant birdlife, the West Coast National Park is just over an hour's drive from Cape Town. It is the perfect South African wildflower destination for those who are on a tight time schedule and can’t make the journey to the Northern Cape.

Fact box: West Coast Flower Hotline

  • During spring, the wildflowers are such a popular attraction that there is a dedicated wildflower hotline that will give visitors up-to-date information about where to see the best flowers. Tips for seeing South African wildflowers in bloom

  • Wildflowers only open during the brightest times of the day. Try to do your flower hunting between 10:30 am and 4 pm.
  • On overcast days the wildflowers will not open.
  • Plan your flower trip from north to south. Flowers always face the sun, so in the southern hemisphere, they face north. Travelling north to south thus gives you the best views of the South African wildflowers on display.
  • Book early for the spring flower displays. The season is short and attracts visitors from South Africa, and abroad. Many people book their accommodation months in advance.
  • Get out of your car and walk amongst the wildflowers whenever possible (and permissible) to truly marvel at their beauty.
  • Tourist offices are a great place to pick up a South African wildflower guide that will deepen your experience with photos and the names of the most common flowers.
  • Flowers are for everyone, resist the temptation to pick them!
