Inside Tips for the Best Great Migration Safari This Year

Great migration safaris differ yearly in response to the rains in East Africa, which determine the movement of grazing animals.

One of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles, the great migration in Africa, also known as the wildebeest migration, is an epic bucket-list event that promises unforgettable wildlife action and amazing photo opportunities.

It's an epic journey of animals sweeping in a clockwise direction between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve. The migration sees nearly 2 million animals, year-round, follow an age-old circular route.

But it’s not just about the wildebeest on this incredible journey.

As these herbivores, plus thousands of zebras and gazelles, move in search of new grass across the Serengeti and Mara, so do their predators!

From lions stalking their prey, crocodiles lying in wait at the Mara River crossings, and hyenas following in the shadows, this is a grand nature show of epic proportions.

Adding to the appeal is that no two Great Wildebeest Migrations are the same.

With an open border between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, the exact timing of the migration changes every year, dictated primarily by when and where the rain falls in East Africa.

With this fluctuating weather factor, plus so many migration packages and key camp locations, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when planning your experience.

That’s where this great migration guide comes in!

It offers the best advice for this year, plus top insider tips to make the most of your trip. Whether it's your first time seeing Africa's great migration or you've been hundreds of times, we’ll help you get the ultimate seats to one of Africa’s most extraordinary events.

How is the 2025 Great Migration Going?

The 2025 wildlife spectacle is already shaping up to be an exciting yet slightly unpredictable event!

While the herds typically linger south of Serengeti and Ndutu until March or even April, they moved north earlier this year.

According to Wild Frontiers' Director, Debbie Addison,

“The herds left Ndutu/southern Serengeti a little earlier this year – and were already moving to central Serengeti at the end of February – at that point, there had been no rains in the southern region. Now, mid-March – the large herds are still spread – some moving to the western corridor, some around central Serengeti and a few tail-enders in the southern plains. The rains have started.”

If you want to witness the great migration in Tanzania or Kenya in 2025, the herds' early movement may alter the regions you want to visit to catch the phenomenon at its best.

Predicted Patterns for the 2025 Animal Movements

Here’s how the great wildebeest migration across Tanzania and Kenya is predicted to play out this year…

January to March 2025

The herds in the Serengeti started shifting north early this year, and the rains began in March.

April to May 2025

The roads will likely become a little tricky as the rains continue, but the landscapes also become increasingly lush during these months.

Crowds are still expected to be low in April and May, despite the migration starting a little earlier this year, and the dramatic skies at this time will also make for some epic photography!

As Moncia Wambui from Asili Adventure Safaris explains,

“As the southern plains dry out, the herds migrate northwest towards the Serengeti's Western Corridor, seeking greener pastures. This phase coincides with the long rains, making the terrain challenging to navigate and some areas inaccessible for vehicles. Consequently, fewer tourists witness this segment of the migration.”

June to Early July 2025

The wildebeest migration is expected to be in full swing across a wide stretch of the Serengeti Park by June.

Director of Wild Frontiers, Debbie Addison, gives us a good insight into these months when she says,

“Large herds can be seen migrating in the west and central areas of the Serengeti in June and in the west, central, and north of the Serengeti in July.”

This makes the summer months a great time to visit, especially if you'd like to have fewer fellow tourists share your experience!

Late July to October / Early November 2025

These months will likely be the time for the real showstopper - the herds crossing the Mara River!

Debbie explains how,

“River crossings typically occur any time from July to November, as game heads north or comes back – although this is very dependent on rains.”

Mid-November to December 2025

As the stampede winds down, the wildebeest herds are expected to start their long journey back to the southern Serengeti, marking the cyclical nature of life in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

January to March 2026

Calving season will be in full swing amongst the southern plains of the Serengeti early next year.

As Asili Adventure Safaris’ Moncia Wambui points out,

“At this time, the herds congregate in the southern Serengeti, particularly in the Ndutu region within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the nutrient-rich plains provide ideal conditions for calving.”

During this time, over 500,000 wildebeest calves will make their grand entrance into the world. That's a staggering 8,000+ wildebeest calves every day!

The abundance of vulnerable newborns will attract numerous predators, especially big cats. The open grasslands around Ndutu make big cat action easy to spot.

If you visit the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in early 2026, expect to see gripping predator action as these hunters take advantage of the easy pickings!

Fluctuations in the Wildebeest Migration Cycle

With the wildebeest herds in the Serengeti already on the move, and if this pattern persists, the first major crossings into Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve could begin ahead of their usual time frame.

On the flip side, unexpected rains could also slow things down.

It’s important to remember that fluctuations in animal movements aren’t unusual - each wildebeest migration is unique and special in its own way.

As always, nature has the final say; local weather conditions in the coming weeks will determine whether wildebeest herds adhere to this earlier timeline or slow their migration pace.

The key thing to remember about seeing the Great Migration in Africa is that this naturally occurring event doesn’t operate like clockwork, and wildlife spotting takes time and patience.

As Monica reminds us,

“The migration, in particular the dramatic river crossings, is unpredictable, because this is a natural occurrence. You may need to wait hours or even days for the perfect moment, but with a well-experienced and knowledgeable guide, you’ll usually get to spot some pretty incredible things.”

Best Time to See the Great Migration in 2025

Debbie reminds us, "The great migration will see thousands of animals moving towards grazing lands in the north—some go west, some go straight up, but overall, large regions are covered."

This means that instead of one big wave of wildebeests charging through, wildebeest migrations comprise smaller groups spread across different areas of the borderless Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Wildebeest migration safaris are exciting journeys that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Mobile camping tours are a popular choice that enables you to track the herds, ensuring you are close to the action.

While nature doesn’t work on a strict schedule, Debbie says, “In August, September, and October, visitors should head to the Northern Serengeti region for the best chance to spot large herds.”

But be prepared!

These months also represent the busiest time of year in the Serengeti and Mara, so expect plenty of vehicles vying for prime game-viewing spots.

If you prefer a quieter East African adventure in 2025, consider May and June, when tourist numbers are usually lower.

There’s still likely to be plenty of animals on the move at this time - especially if the earlier-than-usual pattern of the Migration this year continues - although nothing about this wildlife spectacle is ever set in stone!

It’s also important to remember that resident fauna is found in these top Kenyan and Tanzanian parks throughout the year, and the wildebeest exodus isn’t the only chance to see amazing animals in these world-famous African destinations.

Although any stage of the great migration is always an impressive sight, the Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara Nature Reserve are vast and beautiful places, filled with wonderful wildlife and epic landscapes year-round.

If you’re still wondering about the best time to visit Serengeti or the best time to visit Masai Mara, the answer should be based on what you want to see. From the calving season on the Ndutu Plains, wildebeest migration in the Seronera, and dramatic river crossings to green rain-soaked landscapes, bird spotting, or bush walking, there are options for every taste.

Where to Head in June

Herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles will likely gather in the western Serengeti during June.

Here, you’ll find them preparing for the dangerous Grumeti River crossings, where predators patiently await their chance to strike.

As Monica explains, “the herds move through the central Serengeti, moving toward the Western Corridor. This migration phase is dynamic and spectacular, as the animals spread out across vast plains, forming long processions that stretch for miles”.

The Western Corridor is traditionally a quieter area with fewer lodges and tourists. Still, it offers excellent game viewing, big cats like lions and cheetah, and hot-air balloon adventures.

Where to Head in July 2025

As July begins, the wildebeest will likely move further north across the Serengeti National Park, approaching the Mara River.

By late July 2025, we expect herds to begin crossing the Mara.

This is when you’ll witness those dramatic, predator-rich river crossings.

On the Tanzanian side, the action unfolds in the Lamai and Kogatende regions, with frequent river crossings and fewer crowds than in Kenya.

Camps around the north of Serengeti and near the Mara River, such as Serengeti Wilderness Camp, offer some of the best wildebeest viewing.

Here, the animals cross rivers right on your doorstep.

Masai Mara is a prime hotspot during this time, with camps offering unbeatable views as the huge herds of wildebeest and zebras gather to brave the dangerous Mara River crossing.

For a front-row seat to the show, the location of your camp is everything.

The best places to stay include the private camps bordering the main reserve, which offer a more intimate, less crowded experience while keeping you close to the action.

You don’t have to time your visit to Masai Mara and Serengeti with the peak migration seasons to have a truly magical and unforgettable experience here.

There’s so much more to Africa than just chasing the wildebeest herds across the plains.

While June through October are full of high-adrenaline river-crossing drama (and a whole lot of tourists), the quieter seasons offer a far more relaxed and intimate wilderness experience.

These months also allow you to slow down for bush walks, soak in your surroundings, and appreciate everything else these famous parks offer.

From January to March, key wildlife locations like the Ndutu region and the southern Serengeti are unmissable for those keen to escape the crowds.

Add to the mix the hungry predators lurking nearby, waiting to pounce, and January through March offers its share of drama… all without the crowds.

Meanwhile, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is where you’ll find Tanzania’s famous crater landscape—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world—as well as the much-talked-about Ndutu Plains.

The Ngorongoro Crater itself, often referred to as "Africa's Eden," is a vast, fertile bowl that supports a dense concentration of animals year-round, such as elephants, lions, zebras, and wildebeest.

Otherwise, if you’d rather stick with Kenya, this 12-day Kenya Safari Tour combines the Mara with other iconic animal-spotting destinations in this country, such as Tsavo East & West, Amboseli National Park, Mount Kenya, Samburu Game Reserve, and Lake Nakuru.
