Senior’s Guide to Botswana: Okavango Delta vs Chobe for Comfort and Accessibility

When planning a safari in Botswana as a senior traveller, prioritising comfort, easy logistics, and an experience that suits your pace is as important as what's on your safari bucket list.

At African Budget Safaris, we've helped many seasoned travellers enjoy the best of Botswana's wilderness, always keeping safety, accessibility, and a good night's rest front and centre.

While Botswana's top safari destinations - the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park - offer very different safari experiences, we've gathered insights from our large selection of senior-friendly safari itineraries to give you a detailed comparison of comfort and accessibility. Perfect for helping you make the right choice!

Accommodation Comfort Levels: Tented Camps vs Riverside Lodges

Okavango Delta

Our safaris in the Okavango Delta feature carefully selected camps and lodges, such as those found within or near Moremi Game Reserve

These comfortable stays typically offer spacious tented accommodation, with ensuite bathrooms, comfy beds, private baths, and decks with spectacular views.

Many of these lodges are deep inside the Delta's wilderness, so you'll often travel by overland and 4x4 vehicles to get there.

While this adds to the sense of adventure, it also means negotiating uneven terrain and some steps.

We always advise travellers with mobility concerns to let us know so we can recommend the most accessible camps.

Chobe National Park

Lodges around Chobe National Park provide a more traditional lodge experience, with solid buildings, easy access, and hotel-style amenities like air conditioning, room service, and pools.

The lodges we pick are usually close to the river, so you have the added benefit of spotting waterside wildlife as you wind down for the day too.

Our Take

For a remote bush experience with excellent facilities, Okavango Delta safaris are the perfect choice.

If you're looking for a more laid-back, accessible stay, Chobe is probably the top option.

Transport Options: How to Get Around on a Botswana Safari

Okavango Delta

Getting into the Delta is all part of the adventure on a Botswana safari!

It typically starts aboard a land vehicle, before you transfer to a mokoro traditional canoe.

These watery journeys offer spectacular views and a one-of-a-kind experience, but can change unexpectedly due to weather conditions.

If boarding a canoe and sitting low is uncomfortable, we can adjust your itinerary to prioritise easier access, such as via motorboats.

Chobe National Park

Chobe's transport logistics are much simpler.

Most of our itineraries involve a game drive aboard one of our comfortable vehicles, followed by a relaxing boat cruise along the Chobe River at the end of the day.

It's perfect if you want to avoid complex transfers and stick to more comfortable sightseeing instead.

Our Take

While Chobe has easier, more straightforward transport and ways to enjoy the scenery, the Delta is a more adventurous destination that requires stamina, balance, and flexibility. However, this will be rewarded with standout scenery and a unique safari experience.

Activity Difficulty Ratings: Adventure vs. Ease

Okavango Delta

Our safaris, especially ones aimed at senior travellers, offer classic activities: game drives, mokoro canoe rides, and guided bush walks.

The mokoro rides, though peaceful, involve sitting low and occasionally balancing. Doing so may be tricky if joint discomfort is a concern.

Bush walks and game drives can also be tailored to your fitness level, and our guides always prioritise your comfort and safety.

Chobe National Park

Chobe's activities on our safaris, such as river cruises and open 4x4 game drives, are low-impact and very comfortable.

During boat safaris on the Chobe River, you remain seated and shaded, and our vehicles can easily access wildlife hotspots without requiring you to walk - perfect if you want to enjoy excellent wildlife viewing without physical exertion.

Our Take

Chobe is an ideal option if you're looking for a safari with maximum comfort and minimal physical effort.

However, if you can handle some gentle activity and have decent mobility, the Delta can offer you a deeper wilderness experience that's unparalleled worldwide.

Proximity to Medical Facilities in the Okavango Delta Vs Chobe River

Okavango Delta

Some of our Okavango Delta lodges are in remote wilderness areas, meaning immediate medical facilities aren't available onsite.

The closest well-equipped hospital is Maun Primary Hospital in Maun, which is roughly a few hours' drive away, depending on your lodge location.

Maun has reliable medical services, including emergency care and pharmacies.

Medical evacuation flights are available from the Delta to Maun for serious medical emergencies.

In serious cases, patients are sometimes flown to larger regional hospitals, such as Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana's capital.

Chobe National Park

Chobe lodges, especially those near Kasane, are near several medical facilities.

The most notable is Kasane Primary Hospital, which offers general and emergency medical services.

Kasane Private Clinic is also staffed with doctors and nurses familiar with international travellers' needs.

Because Kasane is a border town, you can also access medical facilities in neighbouring countries, such as Livingstone General Hospital in Zambia or Victoria Falls Clinic in Zimbabwe.

Both sites are accessible within a short drive.

Our Take

If quick access to medical care is a priority, our Chobe safaris offer peace of mind with quick access to multiple medical facilities.

Meanwhile, the Okavango Delta's remote beauty does involve being further from the closest medical facility, so comprehensive travel insurance and medical evacuation coverage are essential.

Rest Day Opportunities

Okavango Delta

Our guests often appreciate the pace of our Delta safari.

Lodges near the Game Reserve offer plenty of quiet spaces for birdwatching or simply taking in the surroundings.

Thanks to the stunning riverbank views, our Chobe lodges provide more options for gentle down days.

Make sure you don't miss the fantastic river sunrise, while watching an excellent variety of birds and animals enjoy a dunk during the cooler part of the day.

Then end your day with a magnificent sunset before enjoying a starlit dinner.

Our Take

Chobe offers a wider variety of rest day options from the comfort of your lodge.

The Delta is perfect for peaceful, uninterrupted bush time.

Delta vs. Chobe for Photography

Okavango Delta

The Delta (and the nearby Moremi Game Reserve) is a photographer's paradise, with gorgeous landscapes and intimate wildlife encounters.

Think elephants, hippos, rhinos and birdlife in amazing settings.

You can even hop on a one-hour scenic flight over the Delta for breathtaking aerial shots.

Chobe National Park

Chobe is famed for large elephant herds along the river, with hippos, and diverse birdlife also easily viewed from a comfortable boat.

This accessibility, when combined with a convenient vehicle Chobe game drive, means you can bring full camera gear.

Comfortable provisions mean you can take as many photos as you want, all while staying comfortable and cool.

Our Take

The Delta offers unique, intimate wildlife photo ops and expansive, breathtaking scenic shots, while Chobe offers watery wildlife shots while staying comfortable.

Which is Best: Okavango Delta vs Chobe for Comfort and Accessibility

The Okavango Delta is a spectacular choice if you're an active senior traveller who loves adventure and has reasonable mobility.
